Apocalypse Divertimento II

Prompted by a question on the previous Apocalypse Divertimento post…

What if it’s only bladed/hand-to hand weapons, no firearms or even ranged weapons.

Well, then… it would be difficult to choose between a tachi and a straight rapier. I know how to use both, but in facing another person with a melee weapon/s which could range from sword and shield to more esoteric items, it’s a hard call. I think a tachi (long katana in case you didn’t know) is deadly if you get a single cut in, but not as useful defensively perhaps. A proper rapier is, I think, hard to defend against and yet provides good defence too, and a rapier and dagger fencing combo is very hard to beat, so I’d likely go for the rapier. If the weight and balance are good I’d go for a straight edged one, kind of like a straight sabre but with a lighter blade. Otherwise for the more traditional epée, which has a triangular blade. For a knife/dagger, a decently sized tanto would also be something I’d think about, though the small guard on them, as on a Gerber Mark II makes it impractical for a dagger and rapier combination, so I may opt for something with a decent guard and dagger-like blade. A smaller everyday knife made of one piece of metal with a paracord wrapped handle would still be my main operating tool.

If there is no limit on the hand-weapons then I’d also have a hand-axe/tomahawk.

If you added ranged weapons but no firearms and no airguns, then I would probably choose a bow over a crossbow.

What about you, in these deserted wastelands?

A good wooden staff, and whatever I can scavenge from the fallen.

I’d go for a boar spear as my primary weapon. Gives you a bit more range, and I think it’s easier to get proficient with than a sword type weapon.
